NYT theme clue: "For the rest of the day" · Edited by Tracy Bennett

Today's Strands board is a lie-in after Halloween: seven theme words for rest and sleep in all its sizes - from a ten-minute catnap to a full slumber - plus a spangram that is not a word at all, but the sound comics draw rising from a sleeper in the funny pages.

Hints, in order

Hint 1 of 3

Take the clue at face value: every theme word is a way of resting - napping, dozing off, or sleeping outright.

Hint 2 of 3

The seven words run from shortest rest to deepest: a brief CATNAP and a light DOZE, the in-between state of DROWSE, a midday SIESTA, and then SLEEP, SLUMBER and SNOOZE.

Hint 3 of 3 - Spangram

The spangram is eight letters, all of them the same: the letter cartoonists stack above a snoring sleeper. It starts with Z at the top of the board and ends with Z at the bottom.
